Hold Unloading

Operations

Discharging bulk cargo from inside a vessel's holds using excavators and suitable equipment.

Detailed explanation

Hold Unloading is a critical port operation: extracting bulk cargo from inside a vessel's compartments (holds).

Hold Unloading Equipment

1. Excavators They enter the hold to extract cargo from areas the crane cannot reach, with arms up to 18 metres.

2. Grabs Handling machines used to pick and carry bulk goods such as phosphate and grain.

3. Heavy Cranes Lift heavy cargo from the hold to the quay with capacity up to 50 tonnes.

Hold Unloading Stages

  • •**Open hold covers**: remove covers safely
  • •**Hold inspection**: check hold safety and air quality
  • •**Start discharge**: use excavators to extract cargo
  • •**Transfer to quay**: carry cargo to storage yards
  • •**Hold cleaning**: remove final residue and certify cleanliness

Hold Unloading Challenges

  • •**Tight spaces**: some holds are narrow and hard to enter
  • •**Residue and dust**: some cargoes leave hard-to-remove residue
  • •**Moisture**: some cargoes are moisture-sensitive
  • •**Time pressure**: discharge must finish on time to avoid demurrage
