Certificate of Origin

Documents

An official certificate proving the cargo originates from a specific country — used for tariff preferences.

Detailed explanation

The Certificate of Origin (CoO) is an official document proving that exported goods are produced or derived from a specific country.

Types of Certificates of Origin

1. Non-Preferential CoO Proves only the country of origin without tariff benefits. Issued by the chamber of commerce in the source country.

2. Preferential CoO Grants tariff benefits such as reduced or exempted duties under trade agreements between countries.

Required Documents

  • •**Certified commercial invoice**
  • •**Proof of manufacture** or birth certificate of the goods
  • •**Commercial register** of the exporter
  • •**Manufacturing contract** (if applicable)
  • •**CoO form** signed by the competent authority

Why It Matters

  • •**Tariff savings**: unlocks reduced duties under trade agreements
  • •**Compliance**: required to import cargo in many destination countries
  • •**Origin proof**: used in trade disputes or investigations
  • •**Health standards**: some goods require origin verification

Important Notes

  • •Must be issued by the competent authority in the source country
  • •Some countries require a sworn translation
  • •Validity is usually limited (6 months to 1 year)
  • •Data must match all other documents
