CIF (Cost, Insurance & Freight)

Trade

Trade term: price includes the cost of goods, insurance, and freight to the destination port.

Detailed explanation

CIF (Cost, Insurance, Freight) means the seller bears the cost of goods, cargo insurance, and freight to the agreed destination port.

CIF in Detail

Seller Responsibilities (Exporter) 1. **Cost of goods** at factory 2. **Ocean freight** to destination port 3. **Cargo insurance** during sea transport 4. **Export customs clearance**

Buyer Responsibilities (Importer) 1. **Import customs clearance** 2. **Duties and taxes** 3. **Transport from port to warehouse** 4. **Additional insurance** (if needed)

Components of CIF Price

**CIF price = cost of goods + freight + insurance**

Insurance Calculation - **Insured value**: typically 110% of cargo value - **Insurance rate**: 0.3% to 1% depending on cargo type

Advantages of CIF

  • •**Simplicity**: buyer knows total cost upfront
  • •**Protection**: cargo is insured in transit
  • •**Accountability**: seller is responsible until arrival
  • •**L/C accepted**: common in banking transactions

Risks of CIF

  • •**Buyer does not control the insurer**
  • •**Insurance may not cover all risks**
  • •**Seller liability ends at port arrival**
